Don't Stand on 2nd Base

One of the things we have noticed in younger kids is that they wont come off 2nd on infield grounders. We practice a couple of things.
1. We teach the kids that if a ball is hit right at them or to their left, go to third. We have a drill where we throw balls to fielders, the player must decide based on the previous instruction. A player scores a point when following the instruction correctly. The kids keep score, and the natural competition kicks in.
2. Another piece is having the base runner watch the 3rd base coach on balls hit to the P,SS,3B. We teach them to release 3 steps, and when the fielder commits-release or return to 2B.
These 2 drills have helped the younger kids (5-9)develop into a little bit wiser base runners....
