Learning to Hit a Change-up

A great indoor drill to help your players feel what "let the ball get to you" really means. All that is needed is a bag full of tennis balls and an indoor hitting tunnel.
While standing roughly 30 feet infront of your hitter, take a pitcher's wind up and throw the tennis ball about 1/2 way to home plate. Two things will happen: By throwing the ball on a skip angle, the ball will slow and have movement (even change planes). Your hitter will see, not only a pitcher's motion, but they will also see a pitch that reacts much like a good change-up.
This is a great way to teach timing, pitch recognition, and balance. For the advanced hitters, I also mix in some "fastballs" (pitches that I don't bounce). Players are taught to read the pitcher's release point to identify if it will be a fastball or change-up.
Try this drill, it is really cool to watch your players make their adjustments!
