Angles and distance

Dan on 15-May-2007 at 13:31:57

After reading some comments made on Offensive Soccer, I thought that I would share a few things. Firstly, As well as creating space, the player must create the right angle and distance of support in order to support the man on the ball. The problem with some players in my teams is that they do not angle off appropriately, which defeats the object of support. In soccer (football), it is vital to teach children especially the natural shapes of the game, triangles and diamonds. We can only do this by enforcing small sided games, 3v3 and 4v4. Children need to learn good habits to proceed in the future. Diamonds, especially provide depth, width and penetration. Types of movement have been discussed here before. It is vital to teach running styles to children from an early age. Things like the overlap is correct, but using the space accurately. So, arced runs, diagonal runs. CHECKED RUNS! Taking the player away and then moving off to create space! Also opposite motions to create space. There are many things, which move from easy to complicated. We must instil the basics first!!
