Teach the Stretch Position through Hitting

Jason Kosanke on 15-May-2007 at 13:31:57

Teach your pitchers, especially young pitchers, how to throw out of the stretch position before learning the wind up. This allows for an easy transition to holding runners, etc. as players progress. When teaching the stretch position, first have a player stand in their hitting position with a bat (on flat ground!). Replace the bat with their glove and ball. The key to being a good hitter is being comfortable in the box. The key to being a good pitcher is being comfortable on the mound. If a player copies their hitting stance in the stretch position, this will accomplish both. Remember, some hitters have awkward batting stances, so some adjustments may have to be made. Watch for too much knee bend, improper weight shift, and stiff arms. Stiff arms will always lead to slow swings and slow pitches. Good Luck!!
