Protecting the scoring position

Is it more important to throw out the runner going from first to third, or to hit the cut off and thus keep the hitter from making his single into a double? Quite often I see outfielders throwing the ball to third or home trying to get an out. Most often they never get the out and they let the batter get to second base on the play. By letting him get to second you now have no chance for a double play and you have just let him into scoring position. Another single from his team mate and he will also score. Many players who try over and over again to make this play have what I call "Hero syndrom" They are going for the glory play, rather than doing the right play. It's nice to have an arm to be able to throw out runners, but it equally important to have a nice brain and know what is more important.
